Gai Waterhouse, an icon in Australian horse racing, has brought the prestigious Melbourne cup to the Gold Coast with the help from local owners and a fierce run by Fiorente.

Gai is a symbolic figure in horse racing as she is one of the most successful trainers in the sport, however, even though she has won many races, she has not been able to win the ‘race that stops the nation’, until now.

To win the Melbourne Cup was a huge achievement in horse racing and also Australian history, said Gai.

“It’s the one everybody wants,” Gai told Bond Gold Coast News. “Horses come from all around the world to win this race.

“It is steeped in history and has outstanding prize money, that cannot be achieved in other racing continents. Its an international event marketed to the world stage.”

It was Gai’s dream ever since she began her training career to win the Melbourne Cup, she said.

“One of the most exciting days of my racing life, an outstanding achievement for my whole team,” said Gai.

Local brothers David and Luke Henderson had a 10% share in the cup winner, Fiorente, and are both over the moon to finally bring a piece of history to the Coast.

“It was a huge thrill, something most people will never get to experience, you dream about it but you never expect it to happen,” said Mr Henderson.

“It’s hard to believe that in 100 years that children will be reading about the Melbourne Cup win.”

Mr Henderson said it was one of the greatest achievements of his life.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, everyone wants to hold that cup.”

With a monumental victory in Gai’s record and a piece of the Melbourne cup on the Coast, the next step for both is to keep trying and dreaming for more success.

“I’m thrilled with what we have just achieved. Now its time to dream bigger and with guidance from Gai, the sky’s the limit,” said Mr Henderson.
