Perfect waves and pristine weather ensured the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp a success in Coolangatta this week.

The iconic annual event, which is in its 11th year, features 250 young talented surfers from across the country testing their skills against the best of their age group.

Former world champion Mark “Occy” Occhilupo, who won the title in 1999 , started the event which has since boomed, competition slots filling in just over an hour.

Gordon Hamiliton a father of a competitor said it was a chance for grommets to improve their skills and measure themselves against other kids in the contest.

Tough competition and fierce rivalry is the atmosphere out on the waves as youths aged 12 – 16 battle it out for first prize.

The competition has been held at Duranbah beach, famed for its consistent world class break.

Mr Hamilton, who travelled from Newcastle for his son to compete, said it was the perfect contest arena with good consistent waves.

Coline Merlet is part of the work crew for the event.

“You know its winter, but it’s been good and sunny,” she said.

The weather is not crucial but makes the event much more enjoyable for competitors and family, she said.

The event finishes July 3.
