Girls just wanna have fun … and self esteem

A church in Helensvale has put on a fashion show for tweens to boost their self-esteem and to prepare them for womanhood.

Church One last weekend created a morning of beauty, pampering and fashion for girls aged seven to 12, with their best friends and their mothers.

Church One Coomera Kids leader Narelle Davenport said the female members of the church were concerned that this age group wanted to behave as teenagers without the required emotional and mental maturity.

“Girls need to build a firm foundation and understanding of their identity as they grow and develop into young ladies,” Mrs Davenport said.

“When they merge into adolescence and become more independent, we want them to be able to understand who they are, to respect their identity, and to see how beautiful they are inside and out.”

The girls were divided into groups and rotated between stations of hair, nail and skin care, arts and craft, and a photo-shoot, before Shop Justice Australia held a fashion show.

The mothers responded positively to the outcome of the event, and are expressing a concern for the lack of attention on this age group in society today.

Belinda de Haan brought her daughter and her daughter’s friend to the event, and said an event like this is encouraging and uplifting for tween girls.

“There is not much for this age group,” Mrs de Haan said.

“It ticks all the boxes for young girls.”

The organisers were also concerned with the influence of the media, and pastor Amanda Pangilinan spoke with the girls about inner beauty.

“These girls are vulnerable and want to fit in,” Pastor Pangilinan said.

With  41 tween girls and more than 20 mothers attending, the organizers considered the ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ event successful, and are planning to schedule a similar event sometime next year.
