Celebrations are already underway to mark this weekend’s Gold Coast 600 at Surfers Paradise.

Arguably the Gold Coast’s most notorious partiers, the Latin community, launched the city’s annual V8 Supercar race week with a Tapas and Torque event in the streets of Main Beach last weekend.

Tedder Avenue was closed to traffic for the Latin-inspired street festival with exotic foods, drinks, dancing and music.

The event is one of several hosted by the Queensland government, Gold Coast City Council and V8 Supercars Australia in the lead up to the race weekend.

Mother of two Yeny Ochoa said that although she doesn’t understand much about cars or races, her sons are looking forward the racing event.

“My boys have been going crazy about the Gold Coast 600 for the past few weeks,” she said.car1“They got their love for race cars from their father and I used it as an excuse to have some quality family time.”

The main attractions for the event included stilt walkers, magicians, fire blowers, Brazilian dancers, Latino musicians and free Latin dance classes.

Gold Coast resident Roberto Coelho said he was happy events like these were being held in the Gold Coast.

“Since I moved here from Brazil I had really missed this kind of festive atmosphere,” he said.

“This event made me feel a little closer to home and I am grateful to the city council for investing in such cultural events.”

As well as Latin ex-pats, the free community event attracted visitors from around the Coast with its exotic Latin foods, drinks and family entertainment.

Latin culture enthusiast Thai Nguyen was excited about participating in the activities the event had to offer.

“I came here today because I wanted to enjoy the festivities and the Gold Coast and also to meet new people,” she said.

“I’ve been really enjoying the festival so far. The music, atmosphere, and people dancing in the street are all super exciting!”
