Gold Coast athletes are looking to the United States to combine their academic studies with fulfilling their sporting dreams.

Kento Ito, a graduate from The Southport School, has just completed his first semester at Winthrop University in South Carolina.

Kento is a student athlete combining his Sports Management degree with the high demands of playing college soccer.

“I’ve always had a great interest in America as a country so it has been great to continue playing the sport I love and get a university degree in America,” he said.

More than 300 Australian student athletes are in the US college system.

Some people say the headhunting of Australian athletes could affect the depth of Australian sport.

“As the level of college sports is so high in America, Australians have the opportunity to learn and grow as players and return to Australia with more experience” said Kento.

Grace Varcoe, another Gold Coast sporting prospect, has recently taken up the offer of a scholarship to North Idaho College in the northwest of America.

Grace, a basketball talent who is studying Exercise Science, was motivated by a change of environment and the opportunity to experience a new culture.

She said she also wanted the challenge of living away from the Gold Coast.

“I get the opportunity to play basketball and have a free tertiary education at a top American college, so I’m going to give it my all,” she said.
