A Tallebudgera-based sports aerobics team is on track for a national title following a series of prominent championship wins in the past year.

The junior fitness team from Intensity Sports Aerobics last year placed third in the Federation of International Sports, Aerobics and Fitness’ national championship and eighth in the international championship, and this year want to improve on their efforts.

Team member Melanie Sharp said the team should perform well because they have bonded since the state final in June.

“We started off really badly,” she said.

“We were all out of time and our fitness wasn’t as good as the other teams competing against us.

“Since then, we’ve really become good friends, and started working as a team, so our timing is getting a lot better.”

The team last year represented Australia in an international championship in the Czech Republic against teams from the Czech Republic, South Africa and Russia.

Aerobics coach Kate Holbourn has been filling in as the Intensity junior fitness team’s coach for the past two weeks and said the team has the potential to do well.

“I think they have the potential to do well, as long as they can take on all the feedback and they can incorporate the little things,” she said.

“It really does depend on what they do in the next four weeks.”

The team’s performance will be circus themed, with songs such as Britney Spears’ Circus and P!nk’s Funhouse on their backing track.

The competition will be held on August 28 at Brisbane’s Sleeman Sports Centre.

Members of the public are welcome to watch  for a small entrance fee.
