The Ballina Fine Wine and Food Festival at the Jockey Club on Sunday attracted a record crowd boosted by day-trippers from the Gold Coast.

The festival was recently named by The Daily Telegraph as one of the top 10 regional food festivals in Australia and is only a 50 minute drive from Gold Coast Airport.

Ballina resident Gillian Gifford said last year’s festival was so enjoyable that she encouraged friends and family from the Gold Coast to attend this year.

“We are having such a wonderful time, the day is perfect for enjoying live music, eating amazing food and sipping a delicious gin and tonic,” Ms Gifford said.

“This is such a great day that we are already encouraging others to come down for next year.”

The festival was organised by the Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Richmond and members were enthusiastic about the success of the day.

Club member Sue Steenson said that the number of people at the festival seemed more than previous years.

“Tickets were available for the festival at several local outlets as well as online to encourage people from other regions to attend,” Ms Steenson said.

As well as the fine wines and spirits available, the festival’s focus on regional produce would satisfy any city foodie.

Port Macquarie based Paella Time employee David Dukes said this was their first time with a stall at the festival and they would definitely be back.

“We have been to many festivals but this one is special, the Ballina people really know how to have fun,” Mr Dukes said.

“There are lots of different food styles here which encourage people to sample things they are not used to and share tastings with friends.”

Ballina Fine Wine and Food Festival is a three-day annual event, further information can be found at www.ballinafinewineandfoodfestival.com.au.
