Locals from all walks of life are getting involved in Winterfest and are expecting a great turnout this Saturday in Varsity Lakes.

The central streets are expected to be buzzing with excitement for the many free events planned throughout the day.

Markets will stir up the streets from 3pm and will highlight crafty and unique vendors.

Just One Lily owner Robyn McGown was eager to share her story about how her business began.

The vibrant jewellery designer began her career with the Gold Coast City Council, but after several years decided she needed a change of pace.

“I’ve been making jewellery for about 10 years, but it’s been in the last two that I’ve branched out and really started to craft the business,” she said.

“Emotionally, it’s been the best experience ever and has really encouraged me to take risks and grow as a person.

“I love what I do, because I’ve started doing what I love.”

After a series of moves across Queensland, she settled in the Gold Coast in the late 90s and has called it home ever since.

Her purple hair is likely to turn heads as Mrs McGown showcases her range of crystal pieces this weekend.

The Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra will also be on display with a lakeside performance from 5.30pm.

Randall Long described the group of 40-60 locals as friendly and inviting.

He said had been playing trumpet for the community group for three years and was looking forward to the evening.

Mr Long, an ex-music teacher, said that lakeside living had proved to be exquisite.

“I moved to Varsity Lakes from Sydney five years ago for a bit of a slower pace,” he said.

“I have been given the opportunity to play many solos [in the orchestra], which has made for an awesome experience.”

The organization was founded in 1984 and has been rocking out ever since.

It includes an ensemble of highly-skilled local musicians who are passionate about making great music, among many supportive community members and sponsors.

Saturday’s event will also feature buskers, food vendors, and live music.

Fireworks will blast off from 8pm to conclude the night.

Winterfest runs from until  August 13 and includes a variety of events around the community and is sponsored by Hinterland Toyota.
