Bond Gold Coast News is the online portal for Bond University journalism students undertaking the Writing for News Media subject. Students are encouraged to find, develop and write about issues relevant to the Gold Coast community.

The subject teaches students, most of whom are in their first year of study at Bond, how to be reporters. Classes are structured like working newsrooms, guided by lecturers and tutors from the news industry.

The subject covers topics such as news values, story structure, how to write an engaging first paragraph, interviewing techniques, working with other communications industries, working under pressure, and ethical and legal challenges.

The ethos of the subject is best summed up in this quote from Robert Radziewicz, faculty adviser at the University of Miami:

“I don’t think you can learn to be a good journalist from inside the classroom. You have to get out and experience the challenges in real-time and real-life situations – developing solid story ideas, interviewing reluctant sources, sorting through realms of information and, finally, writing a coherent story under deadline pressure. Every story is a different experience that can’t be replicated in a classroom.”
